Futons

Why Choose a Dreamcraft Futon?

Our futons are carefully handcrafted using traditional techniques. We layer, one by one, the batts of cotton, sew the center seam by hand and hand tuft to insure the cotton remains stable with use.

Futons give you a firm support while you sleep. Your new futon will be more buoyant and fluffy and in time will pack down to approximately half it’s original thickness to be a firm mattress. Organic cotton packs down slightly more. It is recommended to turn the futon regularly, from top to bottom and head to foot to insure the futon packs down evenly.

We offer our futons in different thicknesses to accommodate different situations and needs.

Thinner 4” futons fold and store easily and can make a good extra bed for the kid’s friends when they come over.

Futons need to be turned regularly to prevent uneven packing down of the cotton.
Consider using two thinner ones to make the turning and rotating process easier.
Having two futons offers an extra bed for when guests stay the night.

It is recommended to use a cover on your futon to help to keep it clean. A simple cotton duck cover is good for futons used only as a bed. For futon sofas, we can make a cover from a decorative print or solid color fabric.

Things to Consider When Purchasing a Futon

Futons will pack down to about 1/2 their original thickness within a year of normal use. However, remember that its weight will not change.

We recommend turning and rotating your futon regularly in order for it to pack down evenly.

Caring for Your Futon

Futons need to be rotated from head to foot; foot to head and flipped top to bottom to allow it to pack down evenly and to help prevent gullies from forming.

Turning your futon once every two weeks for the first two months is recommended after which once a month will be sufficient for the first year. Once the futon has packed down well, the turning of your futon can be more infrequent – every few months or so.

Keep your futon on a frame, off the floor. Moisture can be trapped if the futon is directly on the floor, creating mold or mildew.

Thinner futons will sink in between the slats in many futon frames. Placing a thin solid piece of wood to cover the slats or tatami mats in a platform bed is recommended should the base or your bed have slats.

The futon can only be spot cleaned. A futon cover is highly recommended to protect your investment.
